Just the thought sends shivers up the spine of any bodybuilder, because this plateau means that in spite of putting in our best at the gym and in the kitchen, no additional progress will be made.
How does a typical lifter take this?
Haphazardly switching up their training routine, these builders do everything they can to “shock” their muscles into new gains…
Exercises and rep ranges get switched up and moved around…
They use techniques like negatives, forced reps, and static holds, trying to break through their plateau into new gains.
HOLD ON!
Even though you want to exercise a variety of tips for bodybuilding to solve the problem, these slowdowns are natural and happen for fundamental reasons.
They are not caused by repeatedly following the same workout.
Most of the time, a plateau simply means that you are overtraining.
Consider some basic physiology and you might understand your body’s reaction….
When we train intensely in the gym, we hurt our muscles.
When you workout, you dig a “hole” in your body’s ability to recover.
Post workout, the body needs to take time to rest and get nutrients in order to rebuild the damaged muscle.
Once your body has fully healed, your body will compensate by creating more muscle mass to combat the stress.

As you get stronger and begin to lift heavier poundages, the stress on your body increases and so does the “hole” in your body’s recovery abilities.
The beginner who is benching 125 pounds is putting a lot less stress on his body than the experienced builder who is pressing 300 pounds.
And what is the connection with the plateaus?
Absolutely everything!
When you are adding more weight to the bar and forcing your body to deal with more stress each week, you HAVE to eventually compensate for the increase in stress by lowering the volume and frequency of your training.
Once the stress from your individual sets is on an upward climb and you continue to perform the same number of sets and stick to your normal training days, your body will be pushed beyond its capability to recover in between workouts.
When you don’t recover fully, your muscles cannot rebuild themselves, and this will eventually affect your muscular size and strength.
This is why your gains slow down and eventually stop —you haven’t given your body the time it needs to recover.
When you don’t take the time to recover, you will keep yourself on the plateau.
Pretty obvious, huh?
Believe it or not, when you become more advanced, you must train less often and with fewer sets!
It makes sense that training intensity and volume is DIRECTLY related, because they are part of a balanced equation that works to decide your progress.
When one goes up, the other has to come down.

Control your frequency and volume!
Consider inserting an additional rest day in between workouts, and decrease the number of sets you perform for each muscle group.
